Backlinks remain a top-three ranking factor, and knowing your link profile is basic SEO hygiene. But small businesses do not need enterprise link indexes — they need answers to three questions: who links to me, who links to my competitors, and where are the gaps.

What a small business actually needs

• Your own backlinks: how many, from where, any toxic ones to disavow.
• Competitor backlinks: where the sites outranking you get their links.
• Link gaps: sites linking to competitors but not you — your outreach list.

That is the whole job. Historical data, API access, and 100-filter prospecting are agency furniture.

Free options that cover it

• Google Search Console (free): Links report shows your top linking sites and pages — straight from Google, always accurate for your own site.
• AutoRank Backlink Analyzer: competitor link profiles and gap analysis at autorankenterprise.com/backlink-analyzer — 5 credits free, no card; paid from $9/mo instead of $129/mo enterprise seats.

The small-business link workflow

1. Quarterly self-check: Search Console links — spot sudden drops or spammy new links.
2. Competitor scan: run the top local competitor through the analyzer; note their best links.
3. Gap outreach: contact the gap sites with something worth linking to — a genuinely useful local resource beats 100 generic pitches.
4. Repeat quarterly. Link building is compounding; consistency beats intensity.

FAQ

How many backlinks does a small business need?

There is no number — a dozen relevant local links beat a hundred irrelevant ones. Relevance and locality over raw count.

Should I buy backlinks?

No. Paid links violate Google's guidelines and risk penalties. Earn them with useful content and genuine outreach.
